It was interesting to gain exposure and experience in the corporate tax world. I was mostly doing provision work as well as contributing to the finalization of the company’s federal tax return. I was given meaningful work the majority of the time, not just scanning and printing.
There were some communication issues within the department and I found myself struggling to stay busy at times.
I loved that members of the CPA Development Program were very involved with the interns and made an effort to integrate them in the social outings and create a welcoming environment.
The environment of the tax department is very different from the environment in other departments. The tax department works later and gets to the office later than other departments and there isn’t a ton of supervision so you have a lot of freedom in your work.
Don’t be afraid to show your personality and go out of your way to make friends at work. Being an intern doesn’t mean you have to be serious all the time in order to be impressive.
